ESSENTIAL SECRETS FOR WINNING THAT SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Below are some of the essential secrets about winning that scholarship award. It will really help your application to be considered.

Tip 1: Be Explicit
Stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt. If your answer to an essay question is abstract, support it with a concrete example that illustrates your point. The scholarship sponsor wants to see evidence that you satisfy their criteria, not just unsupported statements.
Tip 2: Apply only if you are eligible.
Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully, and make sure that you are eligible before you send in your application. Your application will not be considered if you aren’t qualified to apply.
Tip 3: Identify the sponsor’s goals.
Try to understand the sponsor’s motivation in offering the award. Do they want to promote interest in their field? Do they want to identify promising future researchers and business leaders? If you can identify their goals, you can direct your application toward satisfying those goals, increasing your chances of winning the award.
Tip 4: Complete the application in full and follow directions.
Many students fail to follow directions. You can give yourself a competitive advantage by reading the directions carefully. Provide everything that is required. But don’t supply things that aren’t requested. You won’t impress and you might be disqualified. Be sure to complete the entire application. If a question doesn’t apply, note that on the application. Don’t just leave it blank.
Tip 5: Neatness counts.
Make several photocopies of all the forms you receive. Use the copies as working drafts as you develop your application packet. It’s always best to type the application. If you must print, do so neatly and legibly. Proofread the entire application carefully. Nothing is less impressive than an application with misspelled words or grammar errors. Ask a friend, teacher, or parent to proofread it as well.
Tip 6: Write an accomplishments resume.
Compile a list of all your accomplishments. This will help you identify your strengths and prepare a better application. Give a copy of the resume to the people who are writing letters of recommendation for you. They will be able to work some of the tidbits into their letters, making it seem as if they know you better.
Tip 7: Watch all deadlines.
Impose a deadline for yourself that is at least two weeks before the stated deadline. Use this “buffer time” to proofread your application before you send it off. YOU are responsible for making sure all parts of the application arrive on time. This includes supporting materials, such as letters of recommendation and transcripts. So make sure everyone who is contributing to your application has ample lead time. If worse comes to worst, call the scholarship provider in advance and ask if it’s possible to receive an extension. Don’t just send the materials in late; many committees will refuse late applications. But don’t rely on extensions–very few scholarship providers allow them at all.
Tip 8: Take steps to make sure your application gets where it needs to go.
Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet and keep it on file. If your application goes astray, you can always reproduce it quickly. Make sure your name (and Social Security number, if applicable) appears on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.
Tip 9: Ask for help if you need it.
If you have problems with the application, do not hesitate to call the sponsor. They will usually be glad to give you help. But don’t expect them to do the work for you. Completing the application is your job.
Tip 10: Remember, your scholarship application represents YOU!
Your ability to submit a neat, timely, complete application reflects on you. It’s the face you present to the sponsoring organization.

Take pride in yourself by submitting the best application you can.

Enjoying your day!

ECOWAS RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM

CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR ENERGY POLICY RESEARCH

The ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) is launching a Research Grant Program and is inviting research teams to submit proposals for policy research in any of the energy fields (e.g. energy technologies, energy finance, energy economics, energy policy, energy and the environment/climate change, energy and development, energy law etc.) Teams will receive a grant amount of not more than €1500 to contribute to the formulation of evidence-based energy policies or strategies in the region.
The Research Grant Program is part of the ECOWAS initiative on Youth Leadership Development in Energy, which works to prepare the region’s young men and women to become globally competitive energy leaders in the future. Aligned with the initiative’s objective, the Research Grant Program aims to build and strengthen the capacity of young West Africans to contribute and participate actively in the energy discourse at the national and regional levels and, thus, ensure that the youth has a say in the way energy development is shaped in West Africa.
With the recent launch of the West African Energy Leaders Groups (a regional branch of the African Energy Leaders Group – AELG) under the Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL), the goal is that the program will represent a knowledge generating body that contributes to the AELG’s core objectives by producing well-researched, academic papers to guide and inform economic and political decision-makers towards the transformation of the region’s energy sector.
The Program will, thus, support research teams with research proposals that are ambitious and innovative, and aimed at generating new knowledge for decision making.
Successful proposals will be selected based on:
1) scientific quality of the proposed research
2) policy relevance
3) competency level of the research team
For Scientific quality, proposals will be judged on:
a) Strength of the hypothesis, theories and/or research questions
b) Appropriateness of the methodology and research design
c) Applicability of the research and its impact.
d) Originality and innovation
e) Multidisciplinary approach
For policy relevance, the proposals will be evaluated based on its contribution towards solving pressing energy issues.
Specifically,
a) Relevance of the research to current or planned policy instruments and legislation.
b) Contribution to the body of knowledge in energy policy formulation and competence of decision-makers
The third group of criteria will focus on the ability of the research team to successfully execute the proposed project, considering if the team (or a member of the team) has executed a project of similar scope.
Evaluation will be based on the:
a) Qualifications, skills and competencies of the research team
b) Feasibility of the research timetable and suitability of the budget

Submission of Application

Research teams must comprise of young West African researchers of not more than 35 years of age (excluding Research Advisor(s)). Participants should at least be students in or graduates from an institution of higher education (in the region or outside the region). Research teams with a Master or PhD degree holder, or equivalent, will be given priority.
Submission of research proposal opens on 1 October, 2015.
Applications should be submitted electronically to researchgrant@ecreee.org   by 30 November, 2015.
The following should be sent along with the research proposal:
• A cover letter;
• A supporting letter from an organisation (public or private) interested in the research and that may use the results of research;
• A letter from the Advisor committed to supervise the research;
• Detailed curriculum vitae of each member of the team (including the Advisor).
The research proposal should state:
• Title
• Brief Introduction
• Background and statement of the problem
• Research question or hypothesis, aim and objectives
• Policy relevance (highlighting its significance, applicability and originality)
• Study design (type of study)
• Possible barriers and limitations to the research
• Data collection methods and instruments
• Data analysis methods
• Research period – Timetable for completion of the project, i.e. schedule of activities
• Participants in the study – e.g. stakeholders to be consulted
• Resources required for the study, including budget
• References
• Appendices
If the paper is accepted for publication, Research Advisors will be paid a sum of €500, separate from the research budget.
The research papers will be published electronically on the ECOWAS Energy Journal and made available on the ECREEE e-library. Furthermore, researchers will be given the opportunity to share their findings and recommendations at conferences and workshops organized by ECREEE.

Margaret Thome Bekema bag diploma @ 97

Margaret Thome Bekema, A 97-year-old woman has received an honorary diploma from a Michigan high school, eight decades after she was forced to drop out to help her family.

Margaret Thome Bekema finally was able to don a mortarboard and fulfill her lifelong goal in front of her friends and family on Thursday. School administrators from Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids presented her with the diploma at the Yorkshire and Stonebridge Manor senior community in Walker. Bekema would have graduated with the Class of 1936, but she left during her junior year to care for her three younger siblings because her mother was ill with cancer.
She said leaving school at age 17 broke her heart and she's thankful for the recognition.
